My name is Rachel Hateley, I am 20 years old and I live in Australia! I am currently a University student studying a course in the area of Education so that I can become a primary (elementary) school teacher as I love working with children. I work part-time as a shop assistant in a local bakery and have been working there for five years since I was 15 years old. I also enjoy playing tennis in the summer months and crafting all year round!
Je m’appelle Rachel Hately, j’ai 20 ans et j’habite en Australie. En ce moment, je suis étudiante et je suis des cours dans le domaine de l’education pour pouvoir devenir institutrice, comme j’aime travailler avec les enfants. Je travaille en temps partiel comme vendeuse dans la boulangerie à côté de chez moi depuis cinq ans. J’ai commencé ce travail à l’age de 15 ans. J’aime aussi jouer au tennis pendant l’été et créer des choses toute l’année!

♥ When and how did your passion for polymer clay start?
♥ Quand et comment votre passion pour la pâte polymère a-t-elle commencé?
I honestly never knew something like polymer clay existed to begin with. When I was younger I always enjoyed digging up the backyard to find clay and dirt that I could mold into a figure and bring it to life (I had a whole collection, although they didn’t last very long outside in the rain haha). I actually came across polymer clay on deviantArt where I posted lots of photos (I’m also really into photography). One of the artists I followed posted a picture of a Nyan Cat she had made and I was so fascinated by it! I asked her about it in the comments and when she told me she made it herself out of polymer clay, of course my first instinct was to go online and research all about this amazing art material. I ended up receiving a few blocks shortly after for my 16^th birthday and from there my love of polymer clay has grown!
Honnêtement, je ne savais pas que la pâte polymère existait. Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’aimais beaucoup déterrer de l’argile et de la boue que j’utilisais pour modeler et ainsi donner vie à des figurines (j’ai eu toute une collection mais elle n’a pas survécu longtemps à l’extérieur sous la pluie, haha). C’est en fait sur deviantArt, où je postais plein de photos (j’aime aussi beaucoup la photographie) que je suis tombée sur la pâte polymère. Une des artistes qui je suivais avait posté une photo d’un Nyan Cat qu’elle avait faite et cela m’a fasciné! Je lui ai posé des questions dans les commentaires et lorsqu’elle m’a dit qu’elle l’avait fait en pâte polymère, ma première réaction était évidemment d’aller sur internet et de trouver toutes les informations sur ce matériau artistique extraordinaire. On m’a offert quelques pains peu après mes 16 ans et depuis, mon amour pour la pâte polymère a grandi!

♥ Is there a charm you have made that you are especially proud of, and if so, why?
♥ Y-a-t il une breloque que vous avez faite et dont vous êtes spécialement fière? Si oui, pour quelle raison?
My favourite thing I have ever made out of polymer clay would have to be not a charm, but a figurine. This is my absolute favourite thing I have made and even though I do have a lots of favourites to choose from, this figurine would have to top the list. I call it my “San-X Tropical Beach Party Figurine” and I am so proud of this creation because of the amount of time, detail, planning and overall sculpting that went into this creation. It was made at the beginning of 2015 and I had designed it as a contest entry on YouTube. The giveaway host didn’t give any specific contest helpers so I began brainstorming designs and I have no idea why, but immediately an image of this figurine popped into my head so I decided to roll with it. I worked on it slowly over a period of two weeks as I was studying at the time and had assessments to complete. The whole piece is made out of polymer clay, except for the water which I made using resin coloured with blue chalk pastels. And amazing as the final product looks to be I did come across many different challenges while constructing it, such as trying to make the leaves take their shape without drooping in the oven or falling off completely. This whole creation was pretty much a puzzle. There are so many pieces that were baked, then modified, then re-baked, then connected to other pieces, and then finally added to the base which was then baked again. I think that is why I am most proud of this creation; even though I struggled with it at some points and found it to be challenging way above my level of ability, I didn’t give up.
Mon objet préféré fait en pâte polymère n’est pas une breloque mais une figurine. Parmi toutes mes créations c’est ma préférée, et si je devais choisir parmi beaucoup de mes favoris, cette figurine est en tête de liste. Je l’appelle ma “San-X Tropical Beach Party Figurine”. J’en suis tellement fière car elle a demandé beaucoup de temps, d’organisation, de détails, et de précision.Je l’ai faite début 2015 pour un concours sur YouTube.
La personne qui organisait le « giveaway » n’avait pas donné d’indications pour nous guider alors j’ai commencé à imaginer plein de choses. Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais l’image de cette figurine m’est apparue en tête et j’ai alors décidé de partir sur ça! J’ai travaillé doucement dessus pendant deux semaines car j’étais étudiante et j’avais des examens à passer en même temps.
La figurine est entièrement faite en pâte polymère à l’exception de l’eau que j’ai réalisé à l’aide de résine colorée avec des pastels bleus. Et même si le résultat final parait très beau, j’ai eu quelques fois du mal à la modeler, comme par exemple faire garder aux feuilles leur forme sans les faire tomber dans le four ou tomber tout court! Cette création ressemblait à un puzzle. Beaucoup de pièces ont été cuites, modifiées, puis re-cuites, assemblées à d’autres pièces et enfin collées sur la base et le tout re-cuit! Je pense que c’est pour cela que je suis le plus fière de ma figurine; même si je me suis battue parfois et que je me suis dit que c’était au dessus de mes capacités, je n’ai pas abandonné.

♥ Where do you look for inspiration?
♥ Où cherchez-vous de l’inspiration?
Inspiration can be found literally everywhere you look! I think it helps that I have always had a very creative mind, but I can find inspiration in anything. Colours, textures, patterns, objects, animals or a combination of multiple can all lead you to thinking of great ideas. I believe when it comes to polymer clay the only limit is your imagination! Looking at other crafters’ photos online can also help spark an idea that you may have never thought of, so of course that is always a great place to start too!
On peut trouver de l’inspiration vraiment partout! Avoir un esprit créatif m’aide mais je trouve de l’inspiration dans tout. Des couleurs, des textures, des motifs, des objets, des animaux ou d’autres choses m’amène à trouver de bonnes idées. Je crois que quand on commence la pâte polymère la seule limite est l’imagination. Regarder des photos d’autres créations en ligne peut aussi vous aider à trouver une idée à laquelle je n’aurai pensé, c’est donc un bon endroit pour commencer!

♥ What advice would you give to someone who has just started to work with polymer clay?
♥ Quel conseil donneriez-vous à quelqu’un qui vient de commencer la pâte polymère?
This is going to sound very cliché of me, but practise makes perfect! Keep experimenting with different techniques, colours etc. in order to find a style that really suits you. One day something might just click or it might take a lot longer. Everyone is different, but if you keep practising you will soon be on the road to creating very unique designs. Definitely don’t give up trying!
Cela peut paraître cliché mais c’est en forgeant qu’on devient forgeron! Continuez à tester différentes techniques, couleurs etc. pour trouver votre propre style. Il se peut qu’un jour vous ayez un déclic mais cela peut aussi prendre plus de temps. C’est différent pour tout le monde mais si vous continuez à travailler vous trouverez bientôt votre voie pour créer des choses uniques. Une chose est sûre: Il ne faut pas abandonner!

♥ You sell your charms on the internet. Do you think your hobby might turn into a full-time job one day?
♥ Vous vendez vos breloques sur internet. Pensez-vous qu’un jour votre passion devriendra un job à temps plein?
As much as I love running my Creative Rachy online store, I don’t see it becoming my full-time job. I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am so I can become a primary school teacher, so I’m not wanting to give that up anytime soon. However, I do hope I can continue to run my little business for a while yet! I love restocking my charms (even though it can take quite a while haha), creating new designs, and sharing them to my followers on social media to find that others love them as much as I do!
Bien que j’aime vraiment gérer ma boutique en ligne Creative Rachy, je ne me vois pas le faire à temps plein. J’ai travaillé très dur pour en arriver là pour devenir institutrice, que je ne me vois pas aujourd’hui changer de voie. Cependant, je compte bien continuer à gérer mon site pour quelques temps encore! J’aime renouveler mes breloques (bien que cela puisse prendre un peu de temps, haha), créer des nouveaux designs et les partager avec mes followers sur les résaux sociaux pour me rendre compte qu’ils les aiment autant que moi!

There are many crafters I look up to! I often go to their YouTube videos to seek inspiration or simply admire their motivation for doing some that they love! A few would have to be xoxRufus, CoolRiceBunnies, LittleSurprisesYT, Heather Wells, funkypinkgal and Cute Tanpopo, although there are many more amazing and inspiring people that I am also subscribed to!
Il y a beaucoup de crafters que j’apprécie! Je regarde souvent leurs vidéos sur YouTube pour trouver de l’inspiration ou j’admire simplement leur motivation à faire quelque chose qu’ils aiment. Il y a par exemple xoxRufus, CoolRiceBunnies, LittleSurprisesYT, Heather Wells, funkypinkgal et Cute Tanpopo mais je suis abonnée à encore plus de personnes extraordinaires et inspirantes!

♥ What are the latest crafting trends in Australia?
♥ Quelle est LA tendance DIY en Australie selon vous?
A lot of people are currently into DIY projects such as home décor and wall art using inexpensive materials. Polymer clay is fairly popular (but definitely not as much as in other countries), although crafters are more into creating polymer clay beads and turning them into jewellery and other accessories rather than sculpting small, kawaii figures like myself.
Il y a beaucoup de gens qui aiment les projets DIY comme la déco d’intérieur avec des matériaux bon marché.
La pâte polymère est assez en vogue (pas autant que dans d’autres pays) mais les crafters préfèrent en faire des perles pour faire des bijoux et des accessoires plutôt que faire des petites figurines kawaii comme moi.

♥ What are your favourite items in our shop?

My favourite would have to be the huge range of polymer clay that you have available; it was definitely that first thing that really caught my eye! There’s such a wide variety of clay and modelling accessories available. I know in some countries it can be very difficult to track down some certain brands and colours of polymer clay, so it is definitely worth taking a look through your selection!
J’aime surtout votre large gamme de pâtes polymères. C’est en tous cas la première chose qui a attirée mon regard! Il y a un large choix de pâtes et d’ accessoires de modelage. Je sais qu’il peut être difficile de trouver certaines marques et couleurs dans certains pays, alors ca vaut vraiment le coup de jeter un oeil sur votre site!
